Victor and Nora - Finished by No-Sign-of-Sanity Victor and Nora - Finished by No-Sign-of-Sanity
EDIT #2: Image updated... again - I've adjusted a few more things to really push the transparency of the reflection and really make the hand in the foreground pop. Thanks to both *Indigo-Ocean and *zimm for their very helpful thoughts on how to improve this piece. Okay, that's it now, I'm not touching it again!!! :shakefist:........................... ;p

EDIT: Image updated - I woke up this morning and I saw a few things in the image that needed a fixin'... so... I fixed 'em ;)

Okay, I know this looks almost identical to the WIP progress version of this piece I posted before, but believe me itís much different. Thereís a lot more depth to both the textures and the characters, and Iíve got the pencil rendering calluses on my fingers to prove it! So, letís just call this Mister Freeze v2.0 ;)

For those not familiar with the character, Victor Fries is a scientist desperately in love with his wife, Nora, who was diagnosed with an incurable degenerative disease. Rather than watch her slowly fade away, he chose to place her in frozen stasis to halt the progress of the disease until he could discover the cure. When the head of the company that Fries worked for tried to have Nora removed from stasis, Victor desperately struggled to stop him. During the physical exchange Victor fell through a table filled with toxic freezing chemicals that freakishly altered his body chemistry. Now unable to live outside of subzero temperatures, Victor is forced to don a special cooling suit to stay alive, and has turned to a life of crime in order to continue to fund the search to find a cure for his wife.

I wanted to try and do a portrait of the man that focused more on his motivations than his nifty freezy powers. So here Victor is reaching out to caress the cheek of his wife thru the glass chamber where she is frozen in stasis before he goes out and commits another crime. I also liked the idea of her looking down on his reflection as though somehow she knows that he's doing this all for her.

This is just a two-part pencil rendering tinted and compiled in Photoshop.

You have captured both Mr. Freeze and Nora perfectly! :o Their's is such a tragic story - but I'm sure there's a happy ending in store for them someday. Great job on such a fantastic piece!

My favorite batman villain used to be the Joker but now it's Mr freeze. I just love his tragic back story. Victor doesn't want to be a villainous killer he just wants to find a cure for his wife Nora which I just think is sweet just like this pic :3

WOW that's awesome!  She and Victor just can't seem to catch a break; She was frozen, shattered, put back together, then dumped into a Lazurus pit where she became a villain known as Lazara, who can shoot fire and bring the dead back to life, and finally was put back on ice by Freeze before the New 52's a bitch, ain't it?

This is so beautiful. You can almost feel Freeze's pain. The love of his life is right there, but she's frozen, unable to hold him, kiss him, love him.

Mr.Freeze is one of my favorite characters-before the animated series he was just another crook with a gun.

Just AMAZING.. simpley  AMAZING!!! then this came to mind.

MR FREEZE: This is how I'll always remember you--- surrounded by winter, forever young, forever beautiful. Rest well, my love. The monster who took you from me will soon learn that revenge is a dish... Best served cold.
BATMAN: My God.
MR FREEZE: Yes, it would move me to tears if I still had tears to shed.
MR FREEZE: Think of it--- To never again walk upon a summer's day with a hot wind in your face and a warm hand to hold. Oh, yes, I'd kill for that.
MR FREEZE: You beg? In my nightmares I see my Nora behind the glass, begging to me with frozen eyes. How I've longed to see that look frozen on you.
BATMAN: A year ago, Ferris Boyle interrupted an experiment and in the process destroyed two lives. Here's the evidence. Good night, humanitarian.
MR FREEZE: I failed you. I wish there were another way for me to say it. I cannot. I can only beg your forgiveness and pray you hear me somehow, someplace... Someplace where a warm hand waits for mine.

This would make a perfect cover to one of DC's issues. Beautiful work, not just because of your art skills but I always love the humble, tragic aspect of Mr. Freeze and the fact he does it all just to cure his wife.

How long have you been drawing for?
No-Sign-of-Sanity Featured By Owner Aug 13, 2011  Professional General Artist
Since I was a little kid. I'm 36 now though I took a large break from about 1997-2005. I've been hitting it hard from 2005 thru present.
nsdjaggar Featured By Owner Aug 13, 2011
That's awesome. I'm going to college for it, I hope to have your talent one day lol. That's great though, have you ever taken art classes/lessons/schooling? And congrats on your new job, sounds awesome!
No-Sign-of-Sanity Featured By Owner Aug 13, 2011  Professional General Artist
Yes, I went to art school (Art Center in Pasadena CA) but I never felt comfortable there and I was completely burned out on making art once I got out of there. That's why I have that several years gap from 1997-2005 where I wasn't making art anymore. I just didn't have it in me.

The fortunate thing is that the entire collectible statue industry sprang up in that off time for me and now I have a really cool job in an field that didn't really exist while I was in school. ;)

Art schools in general are a mixed bag and they suit some people's temperaments more than others. They are also definitely places where you get out what you put in. So you can absolutely be as good as you want to be, but you're just going to have to push and motivate yourself to get there.
nsdjaggar Featured By Owner Aug 14, 2011
That's awesome! I was looking at the Art Center which is kinda funny. But found the Kubert School which I think will be a better approach for what I want to get out of school. If you don't mind me asking, do you work from home now or do you go to a corporate building and work with other artists for the statue work?
No-Sign-of-Sanity Featured By Owner Aug 14, 2011  Professional General Artist
As of last Monday I report to the Sideshow Offices for work each day. I was working as a freelance sculptor and concept artists for them for about 1.5 years prior to being hired full-time, and I was doing that out of my home in Washington state. I relocated to CA so I could take the full-time gig at their home base in Thousand Oaks.

I've heard good things about the Kubert school so you should be in good hands there if that's where you decide to attend. But the best piece of advice I can give you is to set your sights really high and remember that you're not only competing with your classmates, but more importantly you're competing with all of the professional artists who are working in the field that you eventually want to enter. Your work needs to be as good as, if not better, than those working professionals for companies to want to take a chance on hiring a new guy fresh out of school with no proven track record.

Best of luck to you man! Work hard and kick some ass! =D
