Green Lantern 1:4 Scale

Description

This is the concept art I did for the Hal Jordan Green Lantern statue for DC Direct’s “1:4 Scale Museum Quality” line. The final statue was expertly sculpted by the completely awesome Ray Villafane and can be seen on DC Direct’s site here [link] There is a “full 360 turnaround option” that I’d recommend you click to get the full idea of what the final statue looks like.

If you click on the link above you can see that this one went thru a fair amount of changes after I did this initial piece of concept art – most notably the entire base was changed from an experimental aircraft to a planet crater. Here’s the deal. The initial idea was that this statue was going to depict the final scene from Hal’s origin story.

Origin story Cliff notes – Abin Sur, Green Lantern of Sector 2814, crash lands on Earth and is on the brink of death. His power ring seeks out a successor. The ring finds military pilot Hal Jordan testing an experimental aircraft. The ring brings the experimental aircraft with Hal inside back to Abin Sur’s crash site. Abin Sur offers Hal the ring and the duty of being his replacement. Hal accepts the ring, and he and the experimental aircraft return to the military base. Hal steps out of the aircraft reborn as the new Green Lantern of Sector 2814.

So that’s what the concept art depicts – Hal Jordan stepping out of the experimental aircraft reborn as a superhero. The problem with the idea is that in order for the aircraft to act as the base for the statue, it has to big enough for it to look like Hal can actually sit in it. Unfortunately what ends up happening is that the base becomes twice as large as the figure and starts taking away from the impact of the character. Plus the statue then become ridiculously expensive due to the enormous base that dwarves the figure.

So once I did the concept art I think it became pretty apparent that the initial idea, while totally cool, just wasn’t really feasible. The base then became a planet instead and the character Ch’;p was added as a fun nod to all the hardcore Green Lantern fans out there. ;)

Green Lantern characters, Hal Jordan and Ch’;p, are copyright DC Comics.
