Green Lantern 1:4 Scale by No-Sign-of-Sanity Green Lantern 1:4 Scale by No-Sign-of-Sanity
This is the concept art I did for the Hal Jordan Green Lantern statue for DC Direct’s “1:4 Scale Museum Quality” line. The final statue was expertly sculpted by the completely awesome Ray Villafane and can be seen on DC Direct’s site here [link] There is a “full 360 turnaround option” that I’d recommend you click to get the full idea of what the final statue looks like.

If you click on the link above you can see that this one went thru a fair amount of changes after I did this initial piece of concept art – most notably the entire base was changed from an experimental aircraft to a planet crater. Here’s the deal. The initial idea was that this statue was going to depict the final scene from Hal’s origin story.

Origin story Cliff notes – Abin Sur, Green Lantern of Sector 2814, crash lands on Earth and is on the brink of death. His power ring seeks out a successor. The ring finds military pilot Hal Jordan testing an experimental aircraft. The ring brings the experimental aircraft with Hal inside back to Abin Sur’s crash site. Abin Sur offers Hal the ring and the duty of being his replacement. Hal accepts the ring, and he and the experimental aircraft return to the military base. Hal steps out of the aircraft reborn as the new Green Lantern of Sector 2814.

So that’s what the concept art depicts – Hal Jordan stepping out of the experimental aircraft reborn as a superhero. The problem with the idea is that in order for the aircraft to act as the base for the statue, it has to big enough for it to look like Hal can actually sit in it. Unfortunately what ends up happening is that the base becomes twice as large as the figure and starts taking away from the impact of the character. Plus the statue then become ridiculously expensive due to the enormous base that dwarves the figure.

So once I did the concept art I think it became pretty apparent that the initial idea, while totally cool, just wasn’t really feasible. The base then became a planet instead and the character Ch’;p was added as a fun nod to all the hardcore Green Lantern fans out there. ;)

Green Lantern characters, Hal Jordan and Ch’;p, are copyright DC Comics.

Mr. O' Neal, this.is.awesome. This would have made it much much better than the actual statue. Hope Sideshow picks this up :)

this would have been cool if it was one of those 30 dollar statues/toys that they sell in toys r us and comic stores but it isn't a full sculpt. Like it's something you can piece together..... it would sell and you'd be able to do the entire image with the ship the size it could be.....

Damn Walter, I wondered what they'd had you working on. Every now and then I'd see something in Previews that I knew had your touch.
Fantastic work!

When are they gonna let you sculpt something for them?

Hey Ronin! I've been sculpting 1:6th scale heads for their 12" and 13" action figure lines since May of this year. Most of that stuff hasn't been announced but I'll pop them up here when they start to show up in Previews. ;)

Still got the drawing chops I see! I was afraid that the darkside of sculpture had claimed you. ;) Incredible work as always! What do you think about Ryan Reynolds playing Green Lantern in the movie version?

Thanks man! I'm not 100% sold on Ryan Reynolds as Hal but I hope he proves me wrong and hits it out of the park. I loves me some Green Lantern so I hope the movie does well enough that turning it into a long standing film franchise is a no-brainer.

Yeah, I wouldn't say that I'm a huge fan either, but I blame that mostly on Blade 3. But I have heard he's like the gay guys' version of Megan Fox! ;)
