This is Alex Ross Justice Batman head that I sculpted for DC Direct’s 1:6 scale action figure line. Doing this project I had the distinct pleasure of corresponding with and being art directed by Alex himself, who I must say, is a very cool guy. He really knew what he wanted and was very patient and constructive while I did my best to get all the ducks to line up in a row.

I ended up sculpting quite a bit of this particular action figure, more so than any of the other figures in the line that I worked on, at the end of the day it was fair amount of work. I sculpted the head, the neck piece, the belt, the boots, the gloves, and 3 sets of hands. Overall I’m pretty happy with how the piece turned out and I hope Alex is too. ;)

Although these photos are of a resin casting, the original head was sculpted in Super Sculpey.

The promotional photos of the finished figure can be seen on DC Direct’s website here [link]

Hi - I think your work is fantastic. I also sculpt quite a bit and when it comes to Batman, the cowl ears/spikes give me alot of trouble. How did you accomplish this in Super Sculpey without it breaking? Thanks!

Thank you. I use an epoxy putty like "Magic-Sculpt" as an armature over which to layer the Sculpey. Magic-Sculpt is great for thin pieces like that because once it sets up it is incredibly rigid even when rolled out into very thin sheets. So in this case, I rolled out a thin sheet magic sculpt in a pasta roller, waited for it to set up and harden, then cut out and sanded the ear shapes that I wanted and used some more Magic-Sculpt to bond them to his head. One they were cemented in place I covered them in sculpey and blended them into the shape if the head.

Thank you so much for that detailed explanation. I really do appreciate it. I would love to earn the opportunity one day to work on something for DC or another company. If you have any tips on how to submit work or get noticed, I'd be grateful! Looking forward to seeing more of your terrific work! Thanks again!

Get yourself to the San Diego Comic-Con or any other major comic convention. Bring a portfolio of your work as well as a tangible sample and start going to the booths of the companies you'd like to work for and introduce yourself. So long as your work is strong and you're not a prima donna or an asshole you shouldn't have a problem building relationships and getting work. But you have to get out there and shake some hands and not just send out emails and links to your portfolio. It's a lot harder to ignore someone who is standing in front of you than it is an email in your inbox. Best of luck to you and happy new year!

Hey there!

Sorry, but there wasn't any specfic concept art done for this piece. I just worked from various images of Alex's batman that have been released over the past decade, and Alex art directed me as I worked.
